Governor Races in 2004
In 2004, 11 states had gubernatorial races; in 5 (MT,
ND, UT, WA, WV) there were open seats. |

(3D) women were candidates in 3 states.
They were: Christine Gregoire (D-WA);
Claire McCaskill (D-MO); Ruth Ann Minner (D-DE).
Three women, Jennie Lee
Sievers (R-MO), Karen Skelton-Memhardt (R-MO) and Fran Shubert
(R-NC), lost their primaries.

Nine
women served as Governors in 2004: Kathleen Blanco (D-LA);
Jennifer Granholm (D-MI); Linda Lingle (R-HI); Judy Martz (R-MT);
Ruth Ann Minner (D-DE); Janet Napolitano (D-AZ); Jodi Rell
(R-CT); Kathleen Sebelius (D-KS); and Olene Walker (R-UT).
In addition, Sila
Calderon
(PDP-PR) served as Governor of Puerto Rico.
Two women governors served in a states where there were 2004 gubernatorial
elections. Neither Judy Martz (R-MT) nor Olene Walker (R) ran for reelection.

1994, a record 34 (18D, 15R, 1ACP) women filed for gubernatorial
races and a record 10 (6D, 3R, 1IND) won their primaries. In
2002, the record was tied with 10 (9D, 1R) women winning their
