With the swearing in of two new assemblywomen this week, New Jersey has jumped to 28th among the states when ranked by proportion of women lawmakers, according to the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP). A
record number of women candidates in the 2007 legislative elections offers the prospect of additional gains in a state

Forty women (26 Democrats and 14 Republicans) will vie for Assembly seats, besting the previous
record of 39 set in 2001. Fifteen women (11D, 4 R) won senatorial primaries, topping the previous

CAWP's issued a press release on March 6, 2006, on women elected to office in New Jersey counties. Since 2002, when CAWP first issued a report card highlighting New Jersey’s record in electing women as mayors and freeholders, improvement has been minimal.

In 1998, the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP), a unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics, created Ready to Run as a bi-partisan effort to recruit and train New Jersey women to run for all levels of office. |
