TO: ALL A/P/S Staff Employees.
FROM: Benefits Committee, Administrative Assembly
There are several legislative issues that affect benefits for Rutgers A/P/S/ staff employees. The purpose of this notice is to help you contact your legislator to express your views. This is an election year which is a good time to express your views. At the end of this notice is a list of Federal and NJ State legislators whom you should contact.
Currently, the three pressing issues are:
- NJ State issue regarding the termination of fully paid medical benefits for retiring A/P/S staff members. This was done by the governor and legislature to cut costs. There are good reasons to believe that staff members will eventually be required to pay even more of their health benefits. You should contact your NJ Assemblymen and NJ Senator.
- NJ State issue regarding the funding of the Pension Plan by floating a huge bond sale. The payments into the pension plans such as PERS fell behind schedule as the funds were used to make up for other shortfalls. Your views need to be known by your NJ Assemblymen and Senator.
- Federal issue regarding the taxation of University tuition benefit to staff members. This is called the Section 127 of the IRS code. The Coalition of University Personnel Association reports that this bill will provide up to $5,250 per year to each employee in tax-free reimbursement for tuition, and fees for non-job-related education. You should contact your U.S. Congressman and Senators to express you views.
Below is the information you need to contact your U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senators and New Jersey Legislators.
The House of Representatives has set up an Internet page called "Write Your Representative" that allows you to send e-mail to even those members without a public e-mail address.
Check out http://rs9.loc.gov/
New Jersey's delegates to the U.S. Congress can be found at http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/
Your district's representatives to the New Jersey State Legislature can be found at http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/html/njmap.htm. This provides a map of New Jersey showing the legislative districts. Clicking on your district will lead to a listing of the municipalities within that district. Click further on the District Number, and the listing for the State Senator and the two Assembly Members from that district will be called up.
