  • What is the Administrative Assembly?

The Administrative Assembly is the codified advisory body to the central administration, and the association representing all eligible administrative, supervisory, and non-academic professional employees.

When and why was the Administrative Assembly formed?

The Assembly is an administrative/professional employee organization which, in lieu of unionization, was created in 1972 through the combined efforts of university administrators and upon the recommendation of the university president. The Administrative Assembly was codified, or made official, in university regulations by the Board of Governors in 1984.

Who does the Administrative Assembly represent?

The Administrative Assembly represents all the administrative, professional, and supervisory (A/P/S) non-faculty personnel of the University except those represented by a bargaining unit, and those serving at the pleasure of the President (i.e., the President's cabinet).

    Who serves on the Assembly?

The Camden and Newark campuses are guaranteed three delegates each. The New Brunswick campus is guaranteed five delegates, one delegate from each of its five "units" – Busch, College Avenue, Cook, Douglass, and Livingston. Each of the three main campuses is, additionally, allocated a group of delegates proportional to the total number of A/P/S staff employed on that campus as of October 1 of the preceding year.

    How are the delegates elected?

Declarations of candidacy are distributed through campus mail to eligible administrators each Fall. Interested individuals declare their candidacy for election by signing and returning the declaration to the Assembly membership committee. An election is held in November on each campus (Camden, New Brunswick, and Newark) if sufficient individuals have filed to warrant an election. If a delegates resigns, that seat is filled for the remainder of the three year terms through appointment from the list of (non-elected) candidates from the last election or others who have expressed their interest to the Assembly.

How many employees are represented by the Administrative Assembly?

Out of a total non-student staff of 11,740, as of September, 1993 the Assembly officially represented 2,171 employees (18.5%), the second largest group of university employees. Academic staff of 5,946 made up the largest group (51%), with 1,891 unionized operations and maintenance employees (16%) ranking third. 1% were professional staff not eligible for representation by the Assembly.

What areas of the university are represented by Administrative Assembly-eligible employees?

Assembly-eligible employees represent a broad cross of areas and disciplines. The largest portion, or 43% serves the academic community in areas such as instruction and research. Student services and library staff comprise 17%, administration 15%, auxiliary services 14% operations and maintenance 6%, and extension and public service 5%.
