Rutgers Department of Art History Slide Classification System
Summary of First-Line Breakdowns

When electronic or digitized images become the major medium for transmission of images, and when data bases provide sophisticated searches of holdings, knowledge of slide classification systems will become less important to locating images. For the present a general knowledge of the system is indispensable for retrieving slides from the collection. A thorough understanding of the system is must knowledge for students employed in the collection.

Historically, Art slide collections have adopted systems to the needs of their primary users and the Department of Art History slide collection at Rutgers is no exception. This system is a result of compromises betwen existing slide classifications systems and the image needs of the Department. The tables are not presented as a model for slide systems but rather for the convenience of those using and maintaining the slide collection.
