Fuego

Photo by Dr. Alfredo Mackenney. A small summit eruption in May, 1962 with an active lava flow on the lhs..note the two parallel lines of steam escaping as the flow descends between levees.

This is a serene shot of a cemetary with Fuego behind it. There is a N-S oriented line of vents from left to right, Fuego, saddle, Acatenango, Yepocapa. Most eruptions are from Fuego with the latest in 1999. Acatenango last erupted in 1972.

The Oct 1974 Plinian eruption of Fuego with same cemetery in foreground. A vertical Plinian eruption column, which extends much higher than the picture can show, dominates the eruption. A Pelean eruption or pyroclastic flow or nuee ardente is boiling down the south (left) flank. Note the profound darkness caused by the shadow of the ash cloud, which extended to as high as 25km. Note the corkscrew appearance of Plinian column. Photo by Ed Greenburg.

Another shot of the 1974 eruption with a red hot base (gas thrust phase) of the plinian column. The billowing ash cloud to the left is rising from a pyroclastic flow. The volcano with a cloud whipping across it in the right foreground is Acatenango.
