Pacaya and its many moods...

A large lava flow with huge plagioclase feldspar crystals (3 cm or more) erupted in 1961 after 76 years of dormancy. In 1963 the cone, last active in 1885, partially collapsed on the south side. Strombolian actiity (below) commenced and has continued to the present.
This is a strombolian eruption in 1963. This activity started the growth of the presently active cone. Photo by A. Mackenney.

This is a spattery, tiny strombolian eruption in 1985. So small you could call the little conelet of agglutinated spatter a hornito.
This is an example of one of Pacaya's many lava flows

This is a blocky strombolian eruption in 1969 with bombs bouncing towards the photographer.

A beautiful example of a strombolian eruption in 1969. High wind velocity blows the ash to the south.

Pacaya's new (from 1963) cone and.a Stromboliam eruption in 1969. Brownish on a dry morning.
