International Activities

Description: Take Back the Tech! is a collaborative campaign to reclaim information and communication technologies (ICT) to end violence against women (VAW). The campaign calls on all ICT users – especially women and girls – to take control of technology and strategically use any ICT platform at hand – (mobile phones, instant messengers, blogs, websites, digital cameras, email, podcasts and more) – for activism against gender-based violence. Take Back the Tech! accompanies the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence (November 25–December 10 each year) with daily actions that explore different aspects of violence against women and ICT tools; See attached leaflet for more details

Organization: The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
Locations: Geneva and other field offices
Dates: November 25–December 10, 2008
Description: UNHCR offices around the world organized a wide range of events and activities to raise awareness and demonstrate their commitment to the elimination of sexual gender-based violence. In Geneva, Deputy High Commissioner L. Craig Johnstone launched an initiative entitled "Hands United Against Harm," which involved staff making a personal commitment against GBV by putting their handprints on banners. Other activities in Geneva included a panel discussion and art exhibition on FGM. UNHCR staff were encouraged to wear white ribbons. Staff offices in Kenya, Mozambique, Botswana, Angola, South Africa, and the DRC also organized programs during the 16 Days Campaign, including cultural activities, discussions, essay competitions, drama contests, and donation drives.

Description: Over 16 days, openDemocracy is running an editorial project in support of the annual activism against gender violence campaign. We are publishing articles and podcasts and running a dedicated blog on our front page. Guest blogger Zohra Moosa of the Fawcett Society is leading the dialogue. Themes we are addressing include: security masculinities and the state, rape and impunity, healthy bodies, coercion and control, and women as trade.
