In August 2006, the Program on International Health and Human Rights, Harvard School of Public Health, and the Center for Women's Global Leadership at Rutgers University organized a consultation to discuss the linkages between Gender Based Violence (GBV) and HIV with a view to understanding common challenges and informing research, advocacy, policy and practice. A small group of organizations and experts working at the intersection of GBV and HIV came together to share lessons learned from working from a variety of entry points, including human rights, gender, feminism, sexuality, and sexual rights, at global, national and local levels, using various methods and within different country contexts. The report summarizes discussions, outcomes, and recommendations from the consultation.

UN: New Report Says Violence Against Women Is a Human Rights Violation
Classification Obliges States to Punish Perpetrators and Prevent Abuse
- September 2006: The UN Secretary General's in-depth study on violence against women is now available on the Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) website as a background document for the 61st session of the General Assembly: http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/vaw/violenceagainstwomenstudydoc.pdf. The presentation to the Third Committee of the General Assembly and launch is scheduled for Monday, October 9, 2006. In preparing the study, the DAW solicited input through a variety of means, e.g. holding expert group meetings, forming an advisory committee and creating an NGO taskforce. The Center for Women's Global Leadership was a member of the NGO taskforce and Executive Director, Charlotte Bunch, served on the international advisory committee.

Research and Service of Center Executive Director Honored by Rutgers Board of Trustees: On May 4, 2006, Charlotte Bunch, CWGL Executive Director and Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies, received the Rutgers University Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Research for the year 2005 – 2006. The award honors faculty members who have made distinguished research contributions to their discipline and/or society at large. University President Richard L. McCormick presented the award and honorarium to Charlotte and other university honorees at a ceremony and reception at his home. In 2002, she was selected by the Board of Governors as a Distinguished Service Professor, and was awarded annual funds to support her ongoing research in the field of women’s human rights. |
