ONGOING FIELD INVESTIGATIONS / RESEARCH IN CAMDEN COUNTY: Staff conducts field trials of new products or formulations. In late 1996 we began evaluation of a pelletized bacterial agent that may last ten (10) days in mosquito habitat. Staff continues to use a Hovercraft All-Terrain Vehicle for inspection and treatment. We have reached many new areas by using the hovercraft.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Camden County has a population of 510,000 residents, living in 221 square miles. The county is in the Atlantic Coastal Plain with land that is in general flat or gently sloping. The soils are mostly sandy but alluvial land and green clays are common. The climate is humid and temperate. Average rainfall is 44 inches per year with the heaviest in March, July, and August.

The Commission’s programs are influenced by repeated events of Eastern Encephalitis and St. Louis Encephalitis and now West Nile Fever in humans, animals and by detection methods. This Commission has experience in the less common areas of hovercraft operation and long reach excavator use.
