NEW JERSEY MOSQUITO CONTROL ASSOCIATION, INC. NEWSLETTER

VOL. XVIII NUMBER 1 January, 2006

President's Message

It is now that time of the year again. Our annual meeting fast approaches; the budget is set; committee chairs are preparing their annual reports for the business meeting recapping their efforts through the year and encouraging support where members feel attention is needed (or at least they should be); speakers are drafting their talks; the program is well along; registration packets have gone out; and we are encouraging all who can to join us in Atlantic City for what we hope will be a very interesting and informative gathering of mosquito control professionals.

Should you require any information regarding our annual convention please feel free to access our website @ http://www-rci.rutgers.edu/~insects/committe.htm  and or reach out to our office staff in Headlee Labs @ 732.932.9341. We will be happy to answer your questions as we are able or pass you along to someone who can.

Before packing your bags, don’t forget to pick up an item for the silent auction, this revenue is dedicated towards our scholarships and our students very much appreciate this support for their research. For those of you who may not know, the old Rutgers Entomology Department building (John B. Smith Hall) has been demolished – yes the building is gone and the view from Headlee Labs is quite different. Should you have a soft spot for a little bit of mosquito control history, with any luck, we will have a few of the bricks ready to auction off.

Also take a scan through your digital photos and bring down a few good shots for everyone to enjoy during the banquet. Heck, if they didn’t win at earlier meetings you may have entered them at give them a try at ours. Cash prizes await those few really good shots that impress our judges. (This, I am told, is not that hard to do!) Let’s make sure we get several photos in every category this year!

Oh yes, if you have not already done so it is still not too late to join up. Jack Nunemaker @ the Camden County Mosquito Extermination Commission 856.566.2945, skeeters@co.camden.nj.us  is still collecting NJMCA membership dues and yes we are still a bit behind. If you are not sure of your status give Jack a call, you might be surprised who has yet re-up, I certainly was.

You should find this information in the registration packet sent out earlier. If you have not received this information for whatever reason, again I urge you to visit our website, nearly all of the information you will need for the meetings can be found there.

I am drafting up the nominating committee for the upcoming elections, yes it is also time to choose our next slate of officers for the coming year. Should you have any feelings on the matter I urge you to reach out to any county mosquito control Superintendent / Program Director and make your feelings known. They can discuss your ideas during the nominating committee meeting which is held early in the morning on the first day of the convention.

I would like you all to know, it has been a pleasure representing NJMCA this past year and I will look forward to all the fine work we can do while I rotate off the executive committee in the next few years.

I will look forward to seeing you in Atlantic City.

Your President,  Scott C. Crans

Reds

Edward “Reds” Hansen, husband of Judy Hansen, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2006 after a lengthy illness. Reds was a lifelong resident of Cape May County and retired as Police Chief of Middle Township after 28 years of service. He was very active in local civic organizations and had many hobbies, including fishing and hunting. Together, Judy and Reds raised 6 children who in turn blessed them with 11 grandchildren. Reds often accompanied Judy to mosquito control meetings and so doing became a friend to many of us in the industry. Reds’ camaraderie and friendship will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to have known him.

Martin Chomsky Remembered

On January 12, 2006, Martin S. Chomsky passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack at the Lakewood Atlantic Coast Rehab Center where he had been successfully undergoing extensive physical therapy as part of his 1 ˝ year recovery from a life threatening infection.

Marty served as a Commissioner of the Monmouth County Mosquito Extermination Commission from February 1, 1975 to April 1, 1982; where he served with distinction as Vice-President and President.  He served as Superintendent and Executive Secretary of the Commission from December 1, 1985 to May 1, 2002.

Marty brought forty years of public health experience to the Commission. Under his pro-active leadership and guidance the Commission excelled in its performance to become a world class mosquito abatement program. During his tenure as Superintendent, Marty accomplished many great things and was a true advocate for mosquito control around the world.

Marty served as a leader in State and international mosquito control organizations and he interacted with academia, legislative and administrative officials on a State and national level.

Marty was instrumental in spearheading the legislative initiative to allow county mosquito commissions to assume leadership in tick assessment and management.

Because of his vision, the Tick-Borne Disease Program was established at the Monmouth County Mosquito Extermination Commission as a regional center for tick-borne disease prevention.

Marty often told me that his two passions in life were mosquito control and his family.
As great as his professional accomplishments were, his devotion and love for his family were far greater.  Marty will be greatly missed by his wife Annette, his children Anita, Ronald, and Debra, his six grandchildren and friends.

As a lasting tribute to former superintendent Martin S. Chomsky, the Commission’s Tick Program will be named in his honor. Additionally, consideration is being given to have a portrait of Marty painted and placed with honor in the Commission’s Carmen Stoppiello Conference Room.

In respect and final tribute to Superintendent Martin S. Chomsky, the flag at the Commission building was flown at half-mast for 30 days. A resolution of the Commissioners in Marty’s memory was presented to his family; and its contents spread upon the official record of the Monmouth County Mosquito Extermination Commission.

UPDATE ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE PROFESSIONAL TRAINING COMMITTEE

The members of the Professional Training Committee have been meeting on a monthly basis since August of 2005, working hard to prepare for the March recertification training courses.  A few changes have been made to the program this year, which we hope will be met with audience approval.  One of these changes involves the afternoon session.  We have decided to put the Mosquito Jeopardy game to rest for awhile, and go back to a full day of speakers.  It has been quite difficult, to say the least, to find willing participants to play the game.  We hope that maybe in a few years we can revisit Mosquito Jeopardy with some renewed vigor!

Since last year’s training sessions, various people have given us ideas, so we have tried to include them in this year’s program.  The 2006 training sessions will contain a variety of topics with expert speakers.  A new feature to our program is a water management talk, and we hope to continue incorporating this topic every year.  There will be something for everyone too, with talks ranging from purely technical in nature to very practical information that can be utilized by all

of us in our daily operations, both in the office and out in the field.  We are confident that you will enjoy this year’s program, and we hope that all of you will continue to give us your thoughts and ideas for future topics.

As usual, we have asked that the NJDEP give us credits for attending the training sessions.  The following are the credits that we are seeking:  1 in 8A, 3 in 8B, 1 in 10, 2 in 11, and 1 in Core.  We have also sent the training

information to the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services for continuing education units for Health Officers and others in the Health field, and to New York and Pennsylvania for credits in categories that correspond to New Jersey’s.  If you are looking to register for one of the March training sessions, the registration packets were mailed and, in some cases, hand-delivered in December to all New Jersey certified applicators in 8B, 10, and 11.  If you or your supervisor has not yet received one, you can either visit the NJMCA website at www.njmosquito.org , or you may contact me at 856-453-2170 or at heatherlo@co.cumberland.nj.us .  Another change to our program this year is the venue for both sessions.  The southern session will be held at Resorts Hotel and Casino on March 14th, and the northern session will be held at the Holiday Inn in Somerset on

March 28th.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or need any more information.

The committee would like to thank everyone who has given us ideas and provided assistance with this very large undertaking, especially our speakers and Dr. Lisa Reed.  In addition, I would like to thank all of the committee members for their hard work and enthusiastic participation; I could not have done any of this without you!

The committee members are:

Doug Abdill, Atlantic County Office of Mosquito Control
Scott Crans, Rutgers University
Bill Evans, Essex County Mosquito Control
Kris McMorland, Morris County MEC
Diane Nale, Rutgers University
Carol Terry, Rutgers University

Tadhgh Rainey, Hunterdon County Mosquito & Vector Control Program
Eric Williges, Essex County Mosquito Control
Wayne Wurtz, Gloucester County Division of Mosquito Control

Sincerely,

Heather A. Lomberk

Seasons greetings everyone!!!
Well, it’s the time of year again… yes the time when we hope and pray that our most talented colleagues will come out of the woodwork and treat us to great photos.
I know what you’re thinking…”Gee Tadhgh, you said the same thing last year… I had a few drinks and those photos were still really bad…”
Not to fear my friends… we’re moving in the right direction. For example, here’s Mark Vlazny’s entry from last year:
Granted, it’s no Picasso, but let’s face it: we kill bugs for a living. This photo ain’t too bad after all, now is it.
Stand up and be counted!!! Submit photos…and lots of them!!!
