If the above list does not provide what you are looking for, let us know. We will be happy to design a program to meet your needs or help direct you to other resources. To schedule a program, call the Counseling Center and tell the secretary what you are looking for. A counselor will call you back later to work out details and scheduling.
Please give us at least two weeks to schedule a program. However, if a situation arises in your building or within your group that requires immediate attention, we will do our best to accommodate your needs (see "Help in Coping..." below).
Help in coping with a traumatic event - your own and others'
If you are going through a crisis or have experienced a traumatic event, a good way to start to cope is to schedule an appointment with a counselor. Emergency services are available.
In addition, however, often a crisis (suicide attempt, assault, death, etc.) suffered by one person has an impact beyond the individual(s) involved. People connected to the victim (such as friends, teammates, hallmates, relatives) may be affected in a number of ways. Often an immediate intervention by a counselor can help individuals come to grips with their feelings, gain a better understanding of the event and their response to it, and develop effective ways of coping with the situation.
Call (732-932-7884) the Coordinator of Consultation and Education (or another member of our Post-Crisis Intervention team if she is out) to talk about the ways we can be of help. Counseling Center staff will make every effort to respond to your request within 48 hours of your call.
Help in knowing how to help someone else you are concerned about
It can be hard to know how much to make of puzzling, painful, or self-destructive behavior in others, and decide what to do about it. Counselors are available to consult about how to make sense of what is going on, and how you can best respond to take care of yourself as well as the person you are worried about. At times you may be able to consult us over the telephone, if a staff member happens to be free. Unfortuntely often everyone will be busy, and the secretary will either arrange to call you back or will make an appointment for you to come in to talk to a counselor in person. If you feel the situation is urgent, please mention that to the secretary, who will do her best to speed things up.
Some other resources
available on this site:
Sport Psychology Services
The Rutgers College Counseling Center has staff members and graduate students who are interested in working with intercollegiate athletes. Services include: performance enhancement strategies for individuals and teams; individual psychotherapy, with awareness of the special issues of intercollegiate athletes; and crisis intervention for individuals and teams. Counselors can also help athletes access services from other offices, such as substance abuse treatment or learning disability consultations when and if necessary. Only limited resources are currently available in this area, so more urgent requests may be responded to first. If you are interested in services in this area, call Dr. Kathy Stratton at 732-932-7884 on Mondays and Thursdays.
