National Team Coach, Hartmut Buschbacher will be moving the women's national team to the ARCO Olympic Training Center, located in Chula Vista, California in January, 1997. An official residency program is scheduled to begin in March.
The center is utilized for high performance training supported by the United States Olympic Committee and USRowing. Its purpose is to provide the best possible environment for athletes to achieve greatest performances at Olympic competition. The center will provide a resident program for the women's team, however, elite athletes who choose to locate in the San Diego area may have access to the facilities subject to USRowing program and training center coaching staff approval. The first two years will allow young athletes an opportunity to train, live and work at very low cost in order to work towards Olympic medals.
Free room and board, a new boathouse, two weight training rooms, meeting rooms, video equipment, sports science testing, medical support, and on-site cross training facilities will be available for approximately 18-22 women and 4-8 men. Sculling and sweep equipment, including small boats will be available with initial training consisting of two workouts per day with one day off during the week.
Employment opportunities will be available through USOC Olympic Job Opportunities Program (OJOP) in addition to local community support. It is our intention to secure as many employment opportunities as possible by the beginning of the resident program.
In January and February of 1997, Hartmut will be conducting identification camps on the West Coast and Midwest, with another potential East Coast camp being considered. He will also he visiting collegiate and club programs. In March, Hartmut will host a camp for team boat training (sweep and sculling). All equipment, housing and meals will be provided. Final details and invitations will be made later.
The residency program and general training at ARCO will take place from January through September with full time coaching available. Coaching clinics and identification camp weekends will demand an periodic absence in coaching.
Based on USOC approval, the 1997 pre-elite camp may take place June 2 - 26, 1996 at the ARCO OTC. Twenty-four to thirty athletes will be selected for camp, culminating with participation at USNationals and potentially the Nation's Cup competitions. Coaches interested in assisting at the pre-elite camp should send a letter of interest to USRowing, Attention Program Staff.
The Fall of 1997 will provide flexible training opportunities and individual athlete performance testing. Speed Orders are tentatively planned for December 21, 1997 in San Diego, Princeton and Augusta.
Coaches interested in observing national team training at ARCO can be coordinated through USRowing Program Staff, Juan Anzaldo or Mary Kramer in consultation with National Team and Olympic Training Center resident coaches. Due to space limitations, access will be based on the discretion of national team coach and program staff.
Finally, athletes at the development level will have the opportunity to participate in regionally based camps to provide as many opportunities for a greater pool of athletes during the Summer. Coaches interested in hosting regional summer development camps for 1997 are invited to send a letter of interest to USRowing, Attention Program Staff.
