Chairperson Crew called the meeting to order and declared that there was a quorum at 1:30 p.m. He explained that the day’s activities actually included two meetings, one of the 1998-99 Senate, and this Organizational Meeting of the 1999-00 Senate.

REPORT OF THE SECRETARY:  Agenda: The agenda was approved as distributed. Communications: Secretary Swalagin reminded 1999-00 Senators to complete a committee preference form and return it to the Senate office.

PRIVILEGE OF THE FLOOR: Privilege of the floor was granted to Nominating Committee Chairperson Harry Janes, a member of the 1998-99 and 1999-00 Senates.

REPORT OF THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE: Nominating Committee Chairperson Harry Janes presented the report of the Nominating Committee.

Senator Janes gave an overview of the nominating and election process. Senator Szatrowski’s motion to forego speeches from unopposed candidates was seconded and approved. Senator Simmons asked that candidates indicate how many times during the past five years they have served in the position for which they are candidates. Senator Janes responded that that information could be voluntarily offered by each candidate. Senator Janes explained that, although Chairperson Crew, who is from Newark, is automatically on next year’s Executive Committee as the immediate past chairperson, the Newark Faculty Executive Committee Member candidate, Senator Borisovets, receiving at least one vote, will become an Executive Committee member, since Senator Crew was not elected this year. This satisfies the requirement that "At least one representative from each major campus…shall be elected to serve on the Executive Committee."

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Chairperson (who serves ex officio as Representative to the Board of Governors): Kathleen Scott, Rutgers College, Faculty. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Vice Chairperson: Samuel Rabinowitz, School of Business-Camden, Faculty. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Vice Chairperson.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, for four positions to the office of Faculty Member of the Executive Committee: Joseph Barone, Pharmacy; Natalie Borisovets, Libraries-Newark; Alice Crozier, FAS-NB, Robert Evans, At-Large Camden; Paul Leath, Rutgers College; Peter Li, FAS-NB; Antonia Tripolitis, University College-NB. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Faculty Member of the Executive Committee.

Senators Borisovets, Crozier, Evans, Leath and Li made statements in support of their candidacies. Secretary Swalagin read statements for Senators Barone and Tripolitis, who were unable to attend the meeting.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, for two positions to the office of Student Member of the Executive Committee: Jeffrey Cohen, Rutgers College; Kyle Haidet, Graduate School-NB. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. For the position of Student Member of the Executive Committee, Senator Bhandari nominated Steeve Augustin, Law-Newark.

Senators Cohen, Haidet and Augustin made statements in support of their candidacies.

Explaining that the Board of Governors had not yet approved adding one Alumnus Senator Member of the Executive Committee, but in anticipation of that action, Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, for one position to the office of Alumnus Member of the Executive Committee: Robert Koehler, Alumni Federation. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Alumnus Senator Member of the Executive Committee.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Faculty Representative to the Board of Governors: Harry Janes, Cook College. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. For the position of Faculty Representative to the Board of Governors, Senator Dembowitz nominated Gerald Pomper, Livingston College.

Senators Janes and Pomper made statements in support of their candidacies.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Student Representative to the Board of Governors: Nuri Emanetoglu, Graduate School-NB; Paul Kuehn, Rutgers College. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. For the position of Student Representative to the Board of Governors, Senators Krantz and Crupi nominated David Singer, Cook College, and Thomas DeGloma, SMLR, respectively.

Senators Emanetoglu, Kuehn, Singer, and DeGloma made statements in support of their candidacies.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, for two positions to the office of Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees: Mark Vodak, Cook College; Joseph Naus, FAS-NB. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Graduate Student Representative to the Board of Trustees: Michael Jackson, Graduate School-NB. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Graduate Student Representative to the Board of Trustees.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Undergraduate Student Representative to the Board of Trustees: Rajiv Parikh, Rutgers College. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. For the position of Undergraduate Student Representative to the Board of Trustees, Senators Cohen and Bhandari nominated Jonathan Kaplowitz, Rutgers, and Bob Cambridge, Rutgers, respectively.

Candidates Parikh, Kaplowitz, and Cambridge made statements in support of their candidacies.

VOTING AND COLLECTION OF BALLOTS: Voting was done on paper ballots prepared by the Secretary and distributed at sign-in only to voting members of the 1999-00 Senate. Mrs. Mickelsen of the Senate Office supervised the collection of the ballots.

RECESS AND COUNTING OF VOTES: Chairperson Crew declared the meeting in recess during tabulation of the votes. Mrs. Mickelsen of the Senate Office supervised tabulation of the ballots. The Regular Meeting of the 1998-99 Senate took place during the recess. Chairperson Crew reconvened the Organizational Meeting of the 1999-2000 Senate at 3:45 p.m.

REPORT OF ELECTION RESULTS: Nominating Committee Chairperson Harry Janes announced the following results of the election of 1999-00 officers, Executive Committee members, and Representatives to the Boards of Governors and Trustees:
 

ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business before the 1999-00 University Senate, the meeting was adjourned by Chairperson Crew at 3:50 p.m.
