PRESIDING OFFICER:  Louie Crew, Chairperson Chairperson Crew called the meeting to order and declared that there was a quorum at 1:30 p.m. He explained that the day’s activities actually included two meetings, one of the 1997-98 Senate, and this Organizational Meeting of the 1998-99 Senate, which prolonged the sign-in process, resulting in the late start. Those present joined Chairperson Crew in welcoming the new Senate.

Chairperson Crew announced plans for a luncheon reception for Senators to be sponsored by the Alumni Federation at the September 1998 Senate meeting.

PRIVILEGE OF THE FLOOR:  Privilege of the floor was granted to Nominating Committee Chairperson Harry Janes, a member of the 1997-98 and 1998-99 Senates.

REPORT OF THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE:  Nominating Committee Chairperson Harry Janes presented the report of the Nominating Committee.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Chairperson (who serves ex officio as Representative to the Board of Governors): Louie Crew, Newark College of Arts and Sciences. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. For the position of Chairperson, the following individual was nominated from the floor by Senator DiTomaso: Ted Szatrowski, Faculty of Management-Newark. The nomination was seconded.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Vice Chairperson: Kathleen Scott, Rutgers College. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Vice Chairperson.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, for a position to the office of (Camden) Faculty Member of the Executive Committee: Samuel Rabinowitz, School of Business-Camden. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor, indicating that only nominations from Camden were allowable in this particular category. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of (Camden) Faculty Member of the Executive Committee.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, for three positions to the office of Faculty Member of the Executive Committee: Joseph Barone, Pharmacy; Robert Kubey, SCILS; Patricia Mayer, Mason Gross School of the Arts; Joseph Pifer, Rutgers College, Antonia Tripolitis, University College-NB; Myroslava Znayenko, Faculty of Arts and Sciences-Newark. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Faculty Member of the Executive Committee.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, for two positions to the office of Student Member of the Executive Committee: Emily Carey, SCILS; George Elias, College of Arts and Sciences- Newark; Lori Krantz, Douglass College; Rajiv Parikh, Rutgers College. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. For the position of Student Member of the Executive Committee, the following individuals were nominated from the floor by Senator Curcio and Senator Sugarman, respectively: James Molnar, Rutgers; Thomas Kimbrell, Rutgers. The nominations were seconded.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Faculty Representative to the Board of Governors: Harry Janes, Cook College; Gerald Pomper, Livingston College. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Faculty Representative to the Board of Governors.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Student Representative to the Board of Governors: John Ruvolo, Livingston College. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Student Representative to the Board of Governors.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, for two positions to the office of Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees: Natalie Borisovets, Libraries; Peter Li, Faculty of Arts and Sciences- NB; Joseph Naus, Faculty of Arts and Sciences-NB; George Sigel, At Large-NB. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Graduate Student Representative to the Board of Trustees: Kyle Haidet, Graduate School-NB; Jeanne Locicero, Law School- Newark. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Graduate Student Representative to the Board of Trustees.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Undergraduate Student Representative to the Board of Trustees: Alexander D’Jamoos, Rutgers College; Scott Sugarman, Cook College. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Undergraduate Student Representative to the Board of Trustees.

On motion, nominations from the floor were closed.

The following individuals made statements for nominees who were unable to attend: Shanti Tangri for Gerald Pomper, Nuri Emanetoglu for Kyle Haidet.

VOTING AND COLLECTION OF BALLOTS: Voting was done on paper ballots prepared by the Secretary and distributed at sign-in only to voting members of the 1998-99 Senate. Mrs. Mickelsen of the Senate Office supervised the collection of the ballots.

RECESS AND COUNTING OF VOTES: Chairperson Crew declared the meeting in recess during tabulation of the votes. Mrs. Mickelsen of the Senate Office supervised tabulation of the ballots. The Regular Meeting of the 1997-98 Senate took place during the recess. Chairperson Crew reconvened the Organizational Meeting of the 1998-99 Senate at 3:40 p.m.

REPORT OF ELECTION RESULTS:  Nominating Committee Chairperson Harry Janes announced the following results of the election of 1998-99 officers, Executive Committee members, and Representatives to the Boards of Governors and Trustees:

CHAIRPERSON: Louie Crew, Newark College of Arts and Sciences

VICE CHAIRPERSON: Kathleen Scott, Rutgers College

BALANCE OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: Joseph Barone, Pharmacy Faculty; Emily Carey, SCILS Student; Lori Krantz, Douglass College Student; Patricia Mayer, MGSA Faculty; Samuel Rabinowitz, School of Business-Camden Faculty; Antonia Tripolitis, University College-NB Faculty.

ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business before the 1998-99 University Senate, the meeting was adjourned by Chairperson Crew at 3:42 p.m.
